📊 POWER BI BEGINNER GUIDE

Power BI for Beginners in Noida —
What to Learn, In What Order, How Fast

Power BI is not difficult — but most beginners learn it in the wrong order. This guide tells you exactly what to do, week by week, to go from zero to job-ready.

What Is Power BI and Why Should Beginners Care?

Power BI is Microsoft's business intelligence tool that connects to your data, lets you transform and model it, and then build interactive reports and dashboards. It is the most widely used BI tool in India — companies from small Noida startups to large corporations like HCL, Infosys, and Genpact use it to track their KPIs.

Power BI Desktop — the main tool you will use — is completely free to download. You do not need to spend money to start learning. What you need is a structured learning path and real data to practice on.

Do You Need Any Prerequisites?

Minimum: Basic Excel knowledge (knowing what a table is, how to sort and filter). You do not need programming skills, Python, or SQL to start Power BI.

Ideal: Excel + SQL background. SQL makes DAX easier to understand. Excel makes data modelling concepts click faster. But they are not required to start — you can pick up Power BI and fill gaps as you go.

8-Week Beginner Roadmap

Week
1

Connect & Explore

Download Power BI Desktop (free), connect to a CSV file, and explore the interface. Build your first bar chart in 20 minutes.

Week
2

Clean Data with Power Query

Learn the query editor to remove duplicates, change column types, and filter rows. This is where most beginners struggle — spend extra time here.

Week
3–4

Build Your First Data Model

Create relationships between tables. Understand the star schema. Build a report with multiple visuals that filter each other.

Week
5–6

Write Basic DAX

Learn CALCULATE, SUM, DIVIDE, and a date table. Build your first measure. The difference between calculated columns and measures.

Week
7–8

Design & Polish

Slicers, drill-through, bookmarks, conditional formatting. Make your report look like a professional product, not a student project.

5 Mistakes Every Beginner Makes (and How to Avoid Them)

✗ Mistake:Skipping data modelling
✓ Fix:DAX only works well on a proper star schema. Spend time on relationships before writing measures.
✗ Mistake:Using calculated columns instead of measures
✓ Fix:Measures are calculated on demand and are more efficient. Default to measures for aggregations.
✗ Mistake:Too many visuals on one page
✓ Fix:One page = one story. 4–6 visuals maximum. More is clutter.
✗ Mistake:Ignoring Power Query
✓ Fix:Clean data before modelling. Dirty data produces wrong results that are hard to debug later.
✗ Mistake:Building without knowing the business question
✓ Fix:Every report should answer a specific question. Define it before you open Power BI.
