CAREER GUIDE — INDIA 2026

Data Analyst Resume India 2026
How to Write One That Actually Gets Interviews

Most data analyst resumes in India fail at one of three things: no real projects, skills listed that cannot be demonstrated, or formatting that breaks ATS parsers. This guide walks through every section — what to write, what to avoid, and the exact patterns that get shortlisted.

Ideal Resume Structure for Data Analysts in India

1
Professional Summary(3–4 lines)
Tools + domain + what you bring — tailored per role
2
Technical Skills(3–5 lines)
Tools only — no soft skills here
3
Projects(6–12 lines)
Most important section for freshers — name, dataset, tools, insight, outcome
4
Work Experience(As needed)
Action verb + tool + scale + outcome bullets
5
Education(2–4 lines)
Degree, institute, year, CGPA if ≥ 7.5
6
Certifications (optional)(1–3 lines)
Only vendor-certified or institute-awarded — not Udemy badges

Section-by-Section Guide — Do & Don't

1. Professional Summary

Do this

Write 3–4 lines that state your tools, domain, and what you bring — written for the specific role you are applying to. Change it for each application type.

Avoid this

Do not write "hardworking team player passionate about data." Every applicant says this. It means nothing.

✓ EXAMPLE — GOOD
Data analyst with hands-on experience in SQL, Power BI, and Python. Built dashboards for retail sales and e-commerce customer behaviour datasets. Seeking a BI analyst role at a company that values data-driven decisions.
✗ EXAMPLE — WEAK
Passionate data enthusiast with excellent communication skills seeking a challenging opportunity to grow in a dynamic organisation.

2. Technical Skills

Do this

List tools by category, be specific about your level where relevant, and only list what you can demonstrate.

Avoid this

Do not create a wall of 30 buzzwords. Do not list "Machine Learning" if you cannot explain gradient descent.

✓ EXAMPLE — GOOD
Excel (XLOOKUP, Power Query, Pivot Tables) · SQL (Joins, Window Functions, CTEs) · Power BI (DAX, data modelling) · Python (pandas, matplotlib, seaborn) · Git (basic)
✗ EXAMPLE — WEAK
Microsoft Office, Data Analysis, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, NLP, Tableau, Power BI, Python, R, Java, Excel, SQL, Statistics

3. Projects (most important for freshers)

Do this

For each project: name it clearly, state the dataset and its size, list the tools, describe one key insight you found, and state the business implication.

Avoid this

Do not write "Analysed data using Python and Power BI." That tells the recruiter nothing about what you actually did.

✓ EXAMPLE — GOOD
E-commerce Sales Analysis (Python, SQL, Power BI) — Analysed 200K+ transaction records from a Kaggle retail dataset. Identified that 62% of revenue came from 8% of customers. Built a Power BI churn risk dashboard segmenting customers by recency, frequency, and value.
✗ EXAMPLE — WEAK
Data Analysis Project — Used Python and Power BI to analyse data and create visualisations for business insights.

4. Work Experience

Do this

Use action verbs + tool + scale + outcome. Start bullets with: Analysed, Built, Automated, Reduced, Increased, Identified. Include numbers wherever real.

Avoid this

Do not write passive descriptions like "Was responsible for data entry and report generation."

✓ EXAMPLE — GOOD
· Built automated weekly MIS report in Excel Power Query, reducing manual effort from 4 hours to 20 minutes
· Analysed customer churn SQL queries across 50K records, identifying 3 segments with 40%+ drop-off
· Designed Power BI dashboard for ops team tracking 12 KPIs in real time
✗ EXAMPLE — WEAK
· Responsible for data management and generating weekly reports
· Assisted the team with various data-related tasks
· Worked on data analysis projects

5. Education

Do this

List degree, institution, year, and CGPA if above 7.5. For data analytics training courses, list them here or in a separate Certifications section.

Avoid this

Do not list every school project or irrelevant coursework. Do not list a 6.2 CGPA — omit it if below 7.

✓ EXAMPLE — GOOD
B.Com (Hons) — Delhi University — 2023 — CGPA: 8.1
Data Analytics Training — EVIKA ACADEMY, Noida — 2025 (Excel, SQL, Power BI, Python)
✗ EXAMPLE — WEAK
B.Com — XYZ College — 2023 — CGPA: 6.2
12th — ABC School — 2020 — 72%
10th — ABC School — 2018 — 85%

ATS Tips — Getting Past the Bot Before a Human Reads It

Most large Indian companies (IT services, MNCs, GCCs) use ATS software to filter resumes before a recruiter sees them.

1
Use the exact tool names from the job description
If the JD says "Power BI" write "Power BI" — not "Microsoft BI" or "business intelligence tool". ATS systems match keywords literally.
2
Use standard section headings
Use "Work Experience", "Projects", "Skills", "Education" — not creative alternatives like "My Journey" or "What I've Built". ATS parsers look for standard labels.
3
Avoid tables and text boxes
ATS systems often cannot parse text inside table cells or text boxes. Use plain text with clear formatting instead.
4
Save as PDF but check the JD
Most Indian companies accept PDF. Some older ATS systems (common at large IT companies) require DOCX. When in doubt, submit both or follow the instruction.
5
Include keywords from the job description naturally
"SQL queries", "data visualisation", "Power BI dashboard", "Excel pivot table" — use the terminology the JD uses in your project and experience bullets.
6
Do not put contact details only in the header image
ATS systems cannot read images. Your name, email, phone, LinkedIn, and GitHub should be plain text at the top of the document.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a data analyst resume include in India in 2026?

A data analyst resume in India should include: (1) a concise professional summary (3–4 lines) focused on your tools and domain; (2) a technical skills section listing Excel, SQL, Power BI, Python, and any domain-specific tools; (3) a projects section with 2–4 real analytics projects that include the dataset, tools used, and quantified outcome; (4) work experience (if any) with bullet points using action verbs and numbers; (5) education; (6) certifications (Microsoft PL-300 or Google Data Analytics if held). The projects section is the most important differentiator for freshers and career changers.

How long should a data analyst resume be in India?

For freshers and those with under 3 years of experience: one page maximum. For experienced professionals (3–8 years): one to two pages. Beyond 8 years: two pages maximum. Indian recruiters at large companies screen hundreds of resumes — a clean, scannable one-pager gets more attention than a dense two-pager for entry-level roles. Never pad your resume to fill pages; every line should earn its place.

What skills should a fresher data analyst list on their resume in India?

A fresher data analyst resume in India should list skills they can actually demonstrate in an interview: Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, SUMIFS), SQL (JOINs, GROUP BY, subqueries — window functions if you know them), Power BI (dashboard creation, basic DAX), Python (pandas, matplotlib) if learned. Do not list skills you cannot use under interview pressure — it creates a mismatch that interviewers spot immediately. Better to list three tools confidently than six tools superficially.

How do I write a data analyst resume with no experience in India?

With no work experience, your projects section becomes your portfolio. Build 2–3 real analytics projects — for example, a Power BI sales dashboard on a retail dataset, a SQL customer analysis on an e-commerce dataset, or a Python EDA on public Indian financial data. Write each project as: dataset + tools + what you found + what decision it could drive. Add these to GitHub with a clean README. A well-written projects section on a one-page resume beats a two-page resume listing internships where you only made PPTs.
