The Honest Reality About Fresher Data Analyst Resumes
Most fresher data analyst resumes fail for one of three reasons: they list tools without showing how they used them, they have no projects section, or they are so heavily designed that ATS systems cannot read them.
Here is what actually gets a fresher shortlisted in Delhi NCR in 2026: a clean, readable resume with at least two real data analysis projects that show you can take a raw dataset and produce a meaningful insight. That is it. Companies are not expecting 3 years of experience — they are expecting evidence that you can actually do the work.
The good news: you can build this resume in a weekend if you know what to focus on. This guide covers exactly what goes where, what to write in each section, and what mistakes to avoid.
One important mindset shift: your resume is not a list of everything you have done. It is a targeted document that answers one question for a recruiter: "Can this person do data analysis work?" Every line should serve that answer.

Resume Format — What Works for Indian ATS Systems
Most large companies in India (IT services, MNCs, banks) use ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) to screen resumes before a human ever sees them. A beautiful Canva resume with columns, icons, and tables will score 0 on ATS and be automatically rejected.
Format rules that get you through ATS:
Page length: One page for freshers. Two pages only if you have more than 2 years of relevant experience.
Font: Calibri, Arial, or Times New Roman at 10–12pt body text. Headings at 14pt bold.
Layout: Single column is safest for ATS. Two columns work if the left column contains only contact info or skills — not experience or education (ATS reads left-to-right and can misread two-column layouts).
File format: Always save as PDF. This preserves your formatting across all devices and email clients. Name the file: FirstName_LastName_DataAnalyst_Resume.pdf
What to avoid: Tables, text boxes, headers and footers (ATS often skips them), images, icons, fancy borders, coloured backgrounds, and anything in the header/footer area.
Margins: 0.75 inches on all sides gives you more space without looking cramped.
Section order for freshers: Contact → Summary → Skills → Projects → Education → Certifications (if any) → Internships (if any).
The Projects section comes before Education for freshers because your projects are your main differentiator — do not bury them at the bottom.

Contact Information — What to Include and What to Skip
Top of your resume, clean and simple.
Include:
• Full name (largest text on the page, 16–18pt bold)
• Phone number (with +91 prefix)
• Professional email (firstname.lastname@gmail.com — not nicknames like "coolboy123")
• LinkedIn URL (customise it: linkedin.com/in/yourname — not the default number URL)
• GitHub URL (if you have projects there — highly recommended)
• City (just city, not full address — "Noida, UP" is sufficient)
Do NOT include:
• Date of birth
• Father's name
• Marital status
• Photograph (this is changing in Indian hiring — photos are no longer expected and can introduce unconscious bias)
• Full home address
• Religion or caste
One thing many freshers miss: customise your LinkedIn URL before putting it on your resume. Go to your LinkedIn profile → Edit public profile & URL → set it to linkedin.com/in/yourfullname. The default URL with random numbers looks unprofessional.

Professional Summary — 2 Lines That Get You Read
The summary sits directly below your contact info and is the first thing a recruiter reads. It should be 2–3 lines maximum and answer: who are you, what can you do, and what are you looking for?
Formula for freshers:
[Degree] graduate with hands-on experience in [tools] through [projects/internship]. Skilled in [2-3 specific skills]. Seeking a [role type] role where I can [specific value you bring].
Example (strong):
"B.Com graduate with hands-on experience in SQL, Excel, and Power BI through 3 self-initiated data analysis projects. Skilled in data cleaning, Pivot Table dashboards, and writing complex SQL queries. Seeking a Data Analyst role in Noida/Delhi NCR where I can convert business data into actionable insights."
Example (weak — do not write this):
"Hardworking and dedicated fresher looking for a challenging opportunity in the field of data analytics to utilise my skills and grow professionally."
The weak version says nothing about your actual skills and sounds like every other resume. The strong version gives a recruiter a specific, scannable picture of what you can do.
Keep your summary honest — do not claim skills you cannot demonstrate in an interview. Recruiters in Delhi NCR are very experienced at spotting inflated resumes.

Skills Section — How to List Tools the Right Way
The skills section should be scannable — a recruiter should be able to see your relevant tools in 5 seconds. Group them by category.
Recommended structure:
Data Analysis & Visualisation: Microsoft Excel (Advanced — Pivot Tables, Power Query, VLOOKUP, Dynamic Charts), Power BI (DAX, Data Modelling, Interactive Dashboards), Tableau (Basic)
Databases & Query Languages: SQL (MySQL, SQL Server — JOINs, Subqueries, CTEs, Window Functions), Microsoft Access (Basic)
Programming: Python (Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib — Data Cleaning, EDA)
Other Tools: MS PowerPoint, Google Sheets, Git/GitHub (Basic)
Common mistakes in skills sections:
Listing skills you cannot demonstrate: if you put "Python" on your resume, you will be asked Python questions. Only list what you can actually answer questions about.
Listing basic as "Proficient": be honest about your level. "SQL (Intermediate — JOINs, aggregations, subqueries)" is better than claiming "Expert" and then struggling in the interview.
Listing irrelevant skills: "MS Paint", "Typing Speed: 45 WPM", "Tally" (unless applying for an accounting role) take up space without adding value for a data analyst role.
Not listing Excel properly: Excel is the most tested tool in data analyst interviews in India. Write it as "Microsoft Excel (Advanced)" and list specific features — VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, Power Query. Not just "MS Office".

Projects Section — The Most Important Section for Freshers
For freshers with no full-time experience, your projects section IS your experience section. This is what gets you shortlisted. Aim for 2–3 projects minimum.
Where to find data for projects:
• Kaggle.com — thousands of free datasets (sales data, HR data, e-commerce, healthcare)
• Data.gov.in — Indian government open data
• RBI, SEBI, MCA websites — financial data
• Your own college or local business data (with permission)
Project entry format:
Project Name | Tools Used | Month Year
• One-line description of the business problem you solved
• What you did: cleaned X rows of data, built Y dashboard, analysed Z trend
• What you found: the specific insight or outcome
Example (strong):
E-Commerce Sales Analysis | Excel, Power BI | June 2026
• Analysed 25,000 transaction records from a Kaggle e-commerce dataset to identify revenue drivers
• Built a Power BI dashboard showing sales by category, region, and month with drill-through capability
• Identified that Electronics category (32% of revenue) had a 45% return rate — flagged as a profitability risk

The strong version has: specific numbers, specific tools, specific insight. The weak version says nothing a recruiter can evaluate.
If you do not have projects yet, stop everything and build 2 projects this week before applying anywhere. A resume without projects will not get shortlisted for data analyst roles in 2026.

Education Section
Education goes after Projects for freshers. Keep it concise.
Include:
• Degree name (B.Tech, BCA, B.Com, MBA, etc.)
• Specialisation if relevant (Statistics, Computer Science, Commerce)
• University/College name
• Year of passing
• Percentage or CGPA (include if above 60% / 6.0 CGPA — skip if below, it is not mandatory)
Example:
Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com)
University of Delhi | 2024
72% (First Division)
If you have a relevant post-graduation (MBA, M.Sc Statistics, MCA), list it first. If you have relevant coursework (Statistics, Database Management, Business Analytics), mention it in one line under your degree.
Do NOT include:
• 10th and 12th marks (unless you are a very fresh graduate with nothing else — even then, just list them briefly)
• College address
• Subject-by-subject marks
• Academic projects that are not data-related
If your percentage is below 60%, do not mention it — it is not mandatory. Focus on making your projects and skills sections strong enough that grades become secondary.

Certifications, Internships & Other Sections
Certifications (optional but useful):
Only list certifications from recognised sources. The ones that carry weight for data analyst roles in India:
• Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300) — most valued
• Google Data Analytics Certificate (Coursera)
• IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate (Coursera)
• Microsoft Excel Expert (MO-201)
• HackerRank SQL (Gold/Diamond badge)
Do NOT list: random institute certificates, YouTube course completions, or certificates from unknown platforms. They add length without adding credibility. Internships:
If you have a relevant internship (data entry, business analysis, MIS, reporting), include it with the same format as projects — role, company, duration, and 2-3 bullet points with specific work done and tools used.
Even a 1-month internship in a relevant field is worth including. Unpaid internships, college placements, and freelance work all count.
Achievements/Extra-curricular (optional):
Include only if directly relevant: "Rank 1 in SQL Hackathon at XYZ College" or "Published data analysis article on LinkedIn with 500+ views". Generic achievements like "Class Representative" or "NSS volunteer" add no value for this role.
Languages:
Skip this section unless you are applying for a role where language matters (customer-facing analytics, regional reporting). "Hindi and English" is assumed for most Delhi NCR roles.

6 Mistakes That Get Fresher Resumes Rejected

Objective instead of Summary
"Seeking a challenging role..." says nothing. Write a 2-line summary that states your skills and what you bring.
✗
Responsibilities instead of achievements
"Was responsible for data analysis" → "Analysed 50,000 rows of sales data to identify a ₹12L revenue gap in Q2." Always add the outcome.
✗
Generic skills list
"Good communication skills, team player, hardworking" on a technical resume is a red flag — it fills space that should have tools and projects.
✗
No numbers anywhere
Every data analyst resume should have numbers. How many rows? How many dashboards? How much time saved? What was the business impact?
✗
Applying with the same resume everywhere
Tailor the summary and skills order to match the job description. If the JD says "Power BI and SQL", put those first in your skills section.
✗
Typos and formatting inconsistencies
A data analyst who cannot proofread their own resume raises doubt about their attention to detail in data work. Proofread three times. Ask someone else to read it.
